What are the requirements for purchasing a gun?
Essentially, an applicant must be 18 years old for long guns or 21 years old for handguns, regulated rifles and machine guns, must have no serious criminal record, no pending court cases, no protective orders, no outstanding fines or judgements, have an honorable service record if ex-military, no history of serious mental conditions and be a resident or a citizen of the US. We will file an application to purchase for you with the state police who will then approve or disapprove based on your background.
Are there any fees?
Yes, Maryland State Police charges $10.00 to check your application.
Can I apply in advance?
No, the gun information and the serial number are part of the application so you must purchase a gun when applying. It's like buying a car, you can't get your registration beforehand.
Will I be licensed to carry my new gun?
No, your application to purchase is NOT a license to carry.
What do I need to bring?
You will need a valid state issued photo ID. "Valid" means that the ID is active, no unpaid fines, no suspensions and all information on the ID is correct. If your address has changed you will need a change of address card from the MVA.
Don't I need to get some training first?
Safety certification is required and it is available for free at www.mdgunsafety.com . The on-line course will take you about 30 minutes. You can do it at our store if you don't have a home computer. Folks with military or police training are exempt.
I am not a citizen of the US but I am a resident. Do I need anything additional?
Yes, please bring your immigration card. Also, you must provide proof of continuous residence. Bring three household bills for the three immediately previous months.
How can I get a permit to carry (CCW) in Maryland?
Permits are highly controlled by Maryland State Police and they are issued based on an assessment of legitimate need. If you have been threatened by someone or if you are a business owner or someone who transports deposits or valuable or sensitive items your chance of success is much better. Do you offer payment terms?
Yes, many customers like to pay half down and half when they get their approved application. But remember, since your approval is only in effect for thirty days, the payment term is limited to thirty days also. A minimum 20% payment is required to start your application process.
What if my application is turned down?
We do not charge for processing if your application to purchase is approved. However, if your application is disapproved by Maryland State Police or if you cancel there is a 20% fee. Later on, if you successfully appeal the disapproval, half of that fee will be returned to you when you reapply for the same gun. The Maryland State fee is not refundable. Please do not apply if you expect to be denied. It is illegal to knowingly lie on the application.
I live in Washington D.C. can I buy a gun at Realco Guns ?
Yes, the good news is that DC residents can now buy handguns. The bad news is that there are over $200 in additional DC fees when you purchase. As of September 2008 revolvers and semi-auto pistols are both okay. Shotguns and rifles are still available and are cheaper and easier to register. Either way we are glad to help you through the bureaucratic red tape.
I live in Virginia can I buy a gun at Realco Guns?
Yes, we can sell long guns to you directly. Handguns or other regulated firearms must be shipped to an FFL in Virginia who will process your application for a small fee.
Do you sell used guns?
Yes we do sell used guns and we back them with a one year warranty for your peace of mind.
Will you help with out-of-state transfers?
Yes we do regular firearm transfers for $75 and NFA guns for $100 plus any Maryland State fees that apply. Remember to check with the seller for MD compliance when you shop out of state.
What other items am I likely to want with my purchase?
We offer a kit that combines all the important accessories for $90. You will get a transport case, a cleaning kit, eye protection and ear protection and membership to the NRA. The one year NRA membership provides $1000 of theft insurance, a monthly magazine and access to the NRA range and to NRA instructors. You can purchase these items separately too.
Do you buy, sell, trade and repair all brands of guns?
